What leagues do the Vikings teams play in?

The Gatineau Vikings compete in various leagues across Quebec and Ontario. U-10 to U-14 teams play in the National Capital Amateur Football Association (NCAFA) in Ottawa, the U-16 team plays in the Quebec Bantam Football League (QBFL), and the U-18 team plays in the Quebec Midget Football League (QMFL) and National Capital Amateur Football Association (NCAFA).

Can I play for both my school team and the Vikings?

No. Football Canada regulations do not permit players to participate on two football teams at the same time. The exception is when the school football season does not overlap with the Vikings season. For example, players may be able to participate on both teams if their school season takes place in the spring and the Vikings season takes place in the fall. Parents and players should be aware that Football Canada guidelines may further limit the number of games a player can participate in each year.

When does the season run?

The games start in mid-August and run until the end of the October. Tryouts normally occur in mid-to late July.

What are the ages/divisions for the football players?

Eligibility is based on the year of birth: U-10 is 2016-2015, U-12 is 2014-2013, U-14 is 2012-2011, U-16 is 2010-2009 and 2008 if the date of birth is after August 31st.

What are the fees?

The registration fee is $500. This fee includes all the games and practices and the loan of football equipment.

In addition, there are also two refundable deposits: A $250 equipment deposit for the loan of the equipment (helmet, shoulder pads, pants, knee pads, belts, and jerseys) and a volunteer bond of $100 per family.

As a 100% volunteer-run organization, each family is required to complete volunteer duties during the season.

Provided that all the equipment is returned and the volunteer obligations are fulfilled, the deposits will be returned at the end of the season.

What equipment is needed?
The Vikings provide most equipment needed to participate. Players are responsible for providing their own football cleats, girdle and a mouthguard.

How do I register?
Registration is completed online through the Vikings website. For insurance and safety reasons, all players must be registered before participating in any on-field activities, including practices, camps, or tryouts. No exceptions can be made.

When do players get their equipment?

Equipment pickup dates, times, and instructions are posted on our homepage and shared with registered families before the season begins.

Are there tryouts to make a team?
Yes. Due to limited roster sizes, all levels participate in a selection camp. These evaluations are typically held in mid-to late July before the season begins. Details will be posted on the AFMO calendar as they become available.

Is there a fee to try out for a Vikings team?

All players trying out for a Vikings team are required to pay a non-refundable $50 fee. The fee must be paid before the first day of training camp. Players selected for a Vikings team have the $50 fee deducted from their season fees.

What happens if I am cut during the training camp?
If a player is not selected for a Vikings team, all equipment must be returned. Once the equipment has been returned, the $250 equipment deposit and $100 volunteer bond will be returned in full. Registration fees will also be refunded, less the initial non-refundable $50 registration fee.
Does everyone play?

Yes. All players who make a Vikings team will have opportunities to participate.

However, the Vikings are a competitive football program, and equal playing time is not guaranteed.

Playing time is determined by the coaching staff and may vary based on factors such as attendance, effort, attitude, skill development, position requirements, and game situations.

How many players are allowed on a team?
Roster sizes are determined by the league. U-10 plays 6 v 6, U-12 plays 9 v 9, all other levels play 12 v 12.

Where, When and How often is practice?
Our home field for practices and games is the turf field at the D’Arcy-Symmes on du Plateau in Gatineau.

Practices typically begin in mid-to late July and are held two to three times per week.

The exact schedule for each level is determined by the head coach and will be posted on the AFMO calendar once finalized.

When will I get my child’s game schedule?

The full schedule for the season is usually released by early August.

While exact dates and times vary by level, families should expect games to be played on weekends from early September through late October.

As soon as the schedules are finalized and provided by the leagues, they will be posted on the AFMO calendar.

How long are the games?
You should plan for a minimum of 90 minutes and a maximum of 120 minutes.
Will they be playing 3 or 4 down football?
In Quebec, all levels play 4 down football. In the Ontario league NCAFA they play 3 down football.

Are there any weight limits?

No, there are no weight limits.

Do I need to remain at the practice field with my child?

Yes. For safety reasons, a parent, guardian, or designated emergency contact must always remain at the practice field.

Although injuries and illnesses are uncommon, football is a contact sport.

If you need to leave for any reason, please ensure that another responsible adult is available to act as your child’s emergency contact before you leave.

The coaches are not responsible for injured players.

What do I do if I have questions/concerns/problems?
Each team has a team manager. They should always be your first point of contact for any issue you might have.

If they do not have the answer, they will direct you to the appropriate Club official.

Please note that as a Club, we adhere to the “24-hour rule”. If you are unhappy for whatever reason, we respectfully request you wait 24 hours before discussing it with the manager.

When is my child’s equipment need to be returned?

Equipment return dates will be communicated to families before the end of the season and typically take place within one week of the team’s final game.

All equipment must be returned on the designated return date.

Failure to return equipment may result in the equipment deposit being forfeited and additional replacement costs being charged.

How will we know when football practices or games are cancelled due to weather conditions?
The Vikings will only cancel practices when weather conditions pose a safety risk to players, such as lightning or extreme heat. Practices are NOT cancelled due to rain.

How do you select coaches?
Coaches are selected each year after an interview process and approval by the Technical Director.
Do your coaches have any training?

Yes. All our coaches are volunteers; however, they are required to complete coaching and safety training.

All coaches attend mandatory league and orientation meetings to ensure they adhere to the mandate of the Club.

I am interested in coaching. How can I become involved?

We are always looking for enthusiastic individuals who would like to help coach and develop our athletes.

If you are interested in becoming a coach, please contact the President, Giovanni La Valle, using the “Contact Us” button on the website.

What happens if my child is injured during a game or practice?

Each team has at least one trained team trainer who will assess the injury and determine the appropriate course of action.

Parents or guardians will be notified as soon as possible in the event of an injury.

If emergency medical attention is required and a parent or guardian is not present, emergency services will be contacted.

How can I help?

Please note that routine communications are not provided by telephone.

Are parents allowed on the field?

For insurance and safety reasons, parents and spectators are not permitted on the field during practice or games unless they are registered and authorized team or club volunteers with Football Quebec. If your child requires assistance with equipment, please provide that assistance outside the fenced playing area. In the event of a serious injury, a parent or guardian may be invited onto the field by a team official when appropriate.

What paperwork will I need to complete?
To participate, the following items must be completed and submitted:

  1. Register the player online through the Vikings website under ‘registration’.
  2. Complete the Football Québec (FQ) Medical Form.
  3. Provide proof og age (e.g., passport, birth certificate, or valid health card).

  5. Proof of parent’s address (e.g., drivers license)

No player will be permitted to participate in training camp until all required paperwork has been received and verified.

The Gatineau Valkyries U-18 team plays in the LFFMQ. The Senior team will play in the CWFL for the 2024 season.

Can I play for my both school team and the Valkyries?
